On 9th December 2020 the Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke at the virtual UNESCO World Press Freedom Conference which was organised by the Netherlands.

During his video address, the Minister acknowledged the importance of independent journalism and of the free press as a pillar of democracy and of pluralist societies. He appealed to resolve crimes against journalist and welcomed the Global Media Defence Fund which is administered by UNESCO and financially supported by Germany as well as the new global human rights sanctions regime of the European Union.

UNESCO is a United Nations Specialised Agency and has a mandate to protect the freedom of the press and of expression. It promotes this mandate worldwide and supports the development of independent and pluralistic media. UNESCO stands up for the security of journalists worldwide.
