In 2020, the Federal Foreign Office will support, for the first time, the UNESCO Global Media Defense Fund with € 100,000. Ambassador Peter Reuss signed the funding agreement with the UNESCO Deputy Director-General Xing Qu on 26 November 2020. The fund was launched by UNESCO in 2019. Its aim is to promote media and press freedom within the framework of the United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity. The fund's resources will be used to support projects that strengthen the protection of journalists and give them access to legal assistance. It will also support investigative journalism and the prosecution of crimes against journalists.

UNESCO is the only specialised agency of the United Nations with a mandate to protect freedom of the press and freedom of expression. It promotes them worldwide and supports the development of independent and pluralistic media and the safety of journalists worldwide.
