On 3rd June, the Maison Heinrich Heine organised a colloquium about the documentary “Shoah” (1985) from the French film producer Claude Lanzmann (1925-2018). The film is considered to be a cinematic milestone of coming to terms with the genocide committed by the Nazis against the European Jews during the Second World War.

The documentary has been recommended by France and Germany to be enlisted for the UNESCO Memory of the World programme so as to protect documentary heritage.

The colloquium was organised in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin, the Jewish Museum of Berlin, the Selma Stern Centre for Jewish Studies of Berlin-Brandenburg and the Association Claude et Felix Lanzmann, and it reunited experts from areas such as history of cinema and media theory.

Ambassador Peter Reuss and the French Ambassador Véronique Roger-Lacan gave a concluding speech, followed by a reception from the German permanent delegation to UNESCO.
