02.08.2022 - Press release

This year, Germany supports UNESCO’s International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) with an amount of 100,000 Euros which makes Germany the second biggest bilateral donor. On 2nd August 2022, Ambassador Peter Reuss signed an agreement to this effect, together with Mrs. Krista Pikkat, Director for Culture and Emergency Situations at UNESCO.

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was signed in 2005 and has become effective since 2007. It is the central international legal instrument for the right of all member states to an independent cultural policy. 151 member states have ratified the convention, i.e. it has become national law in these countries. The European Union ratified the convention in 2006. The German Commission for UNESCO has been appointed as a focal point for the convention by the German federal government and the German federal states.
