The Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Mrs Katja Keul, participated on 8th November 2023 at the 42nd session of UNESCO’s General Conference (07.-22.11.2023) in Paris. As the head of the German delegation, she made a speech at the general policy debate, which can be viewed under the following link.

In the margins of the conference, the Minister of State met UNESCO’s Director General, Mrs Audrey Azoulay. She had bilateral meetings with the Assistant Director-General for Education, Mrs Stefania Giannini, with the Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External, Mr Anthony Ohemeng-Boamah, as well as with the Director of the Bureau of Strategic Planning, Mrs Zazie Schäfer. The Minister of State also met with ministers of education from Canada, Pakistan, Tunisia, Angola, Cape Verde and Italy. On this occasion, the Minister of State discussed the revised draft of the 1974 Recommendation concerning Education for International Understanding, Co-operation and Peace and Education relating to Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms PDF / 368 KB , which was adopted during the 42nd session of UNESCO’s General Conference.

During a meeting with the Director of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, Mr Lazare Eloundou Assomo, the Minister of State reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the protection and monitoring of cultural heritage worldwide and she pledged further support, such as capacity building and training of young people for the implementation of the world heritage convention.
