Germany supports the UNESCO Fund for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict with a voluntary contribution of 30,000 Euros. On 7th December 2023, Ambassador Kerstin Pürschel and the Assistant Director-General for Culture of UNESCO, Ernesto Ottone, signed a funding agreement at the margins of a UNESCO conference that took place in Kasane (Botswana).
By providing financial assistance through the Fund, UNESCO implements projects so as to protect and preserve cultural property in the event of armed conflict. This includes emergency assistance, projects in post-conflict scenarios or preventive measures in times of peace (i.e. damage assessment, supply of protective gear, evacuation plans, inventories, military training and training of specialist staff).
During the last years, countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan, Mali and Libya benefitted from this financial assistance.
