19.12.2025 - Press release

The German government supports reconstruction in Syria within the framework of UNESCO with a voluntary contribution of €500,000. This financial aid will be used to implement measures to protect Syrian cultural heritage, to develop the education sector, and to promote a pluralistic media landscape.

The fund was established in April 2025 on the joint initiative of Syria and Germany with an initial deposit of €100,000 by Germany. Since then, UNESCO has been able to implement first emergency aid measures so as to protect Syria's cultural heritage, including securing the National Museum in Damascus and preserving its holdings. UNESCO's work in Syria is to be gradually expanded depending on further developments on the ground.

On 19th December 2025, Ambassador Kerstin Pürschel met UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany so as to conclude the agreement.
